In 1960, Gerry and Paulina Denbok opened the Burlington Book & Bible Store on Glenwood School Drive, with an initial inventory of $300.00. Three years later, as the store moved to Brant Street, the name became Family Bookstore. The final name change occurred in 1968, as the store became The Family Christian Bookstore. In 1974, the store moved to its present location at 750 Guelph Line, Burlington, occupying only a quarter of its present space.
The store was purchased in 1992 by Ed & Wilma Gringhuis, when the Denboks retired. In 1998, a vision to expand the store was realized. The floor space was tripled, and a Bargain Basement was added. In 2001, an additional "events" room was added, in an effort to provide resource events to support the local church in her ministry. In the summer of 2004, a new vision prompted yet another expansion, adding a new music department and allowing for more space devoted to a Family Centre in the original store.
In 2005 the Gringhuis' commenced looking into the possibility of selling the store and on August 1, 2006 Jack & Karyn Huisman took over ownership. Jack and Karyn continue the legacy and have exciting plans for the store. One of their visions is to have an online store available to offer more convenience to customers and to those who cannot make it into the store. They look forward to offering the same fantastic service and large selection of Christian literature, music and gifts. Come into the store, they would be pleased to meet you!
The Family Christian Bookstore continues to be a strong presence in the community, partnering together with churches and individuals in Burlington and surrounding areas to further the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
